Struggling With Personal Care

I’m really struggling with personal care tasks like showering patients or helping with toileting. I always blush and I’m worried I’m making patients uncomfortable too. Is this a sign I’m not suited to nursing?

Nurse J says…

Rosie, right now you’re making it about you. That’s why it feels awkward.

Your patient is thinking, “Please let this be dignified,” not “Wow, this student looks nervous.” Shift your focus.

Slow down, explain what you’re doing, and act like it’s normal—because it is. Confidence comes from repetition, not waiting until you magically feel ready.

Also, every nurse has had an awkward toileting moment or two. Welcome to the club.
