I Cried in Front of a Patient

A patient told me something heartbreaking and I teared up in the room. I feel so embarrassed and unprofessional.

Nurse J says…

Patients are human.

You are human.

A brief genuine emotional response is not automatically unprofessional.

What matters is:

  • whether the interaction stayed patient-focused

  • whether they ended up comforting you

  • whether you remained functional.

Patients often appreciate warmth and authenticity more than robotic detachment.

But part of becoming a nurse is learning emotional containment, i.e. feeling compassion without emotionally collapsing into every situation.

That skill develops gradually with experience - you’ll get there.
